OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Upset, frustrated and lost.

Those are the emotions expressed by the family of Gage Walter, who tells 6 News he was found not guilty by reason of insanity.

In August 2022, Walter was accused of killing his grandmother, 70 year old Linda Walter and his great grandmother 93 year old Marceline Teeters at Linda’s home in Omaha.

Two years later, the family says they do not agree with the decision.

“We got zero justice out of this,” said Scott Walter, Linda’s son. “My mother and grandma did not deserve what they got.”

“Frustrating, it’s disappointing,” said Amy Walter, Gage’s Aunt. “There is no justice for these two women who were brutally murdered.”

“We are just lost,” explained Jim Walter, Linda’s husband. "He got what he wanted and as far as I am concerned, he’s not being punished.”

Jim says the past two years have been very difficult and the road ahead will be tough.

The family says they missed early warning signs and excessive drug use are what they attribute to what happened that night in August.

They will be reminded of the tragedy every year when they attend Gage’s competency hearings.

”We talk about it all the time, but there, I keep saying it, there is nothing we can do and that’s what destroys everything,” says Jim. “I mean he destroyed my life two years ago, and now he gets to do it for the rest of my life and most of my kids’ life because we are always going to have to worry if he gets out...We get no closure for the rest of our lives. Me it won’t be that long but these guys they got a long life to live and they will go through this every year.”

The family tells 6 News they will now try to move on. They’ve been sharing stories and photos of Linda, preserving who she was and what she meant to the family.

”She was real big on family, she was kind of the monarch, she loved all of us so dearly,” said Jim.

“She was just the best, just the best,” said Amy “Even my two year old niece she will see the picture and she knows its nana, my grandson says he sees her on the porch you know. All just kind of the things that give you a little happiness, ya know.”

Jim says his family have been helping him during this time and that being around his grandkids and great grandkids have been comforting.
