Gordmans makes surprise return to Omaha
A department store that was forced to close its door is making a comeback to the city where it was founded.
Gordmans filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy last year because of sluggish sales. Now the stores have a new owner and Gordmans plans to once again open its doors in Omaha. Stores in Council Bluffs and Fremont remained open after the bankruptcy.
A former Gordmans store location will soon be home to a new Gordmans store. Inside work is being done to prepare the building in the West Grayhawk Shopping Center near 147th and West Maple to once again sell merchandise under the Gordmans name.
People who live and shop in the area were a little surprised with the return of the store.
Mike Richards said, “I thought Gordmans was a done deal. I thought they were long gone. I didn’t know they were going to be making an appearance again.”
Christy Walk said, “It’ll be good. More jobs for people.”
Gordmans officials are already putting out the word that there will be jobs available. The store plans to hold a hiring event September 17th and 18th.
A statement from the organization reads, in part: “Stage Stores is delighted to open a Gordmans store based on the retail chain’s heritage of being founded in Omaha more than 100 years ago.
Officials hope to have all of this ready in time for the Christmas shopping season.
The store is scheduled to open on November 1st.
The Omaha Gordmans store hiring event is set for September 17th and 18th from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at 14933 Evans Plaza in the West Grayhawk Shopping Center.
