Fatal NYE Crash: Remembering Ann Smock

For more than a decade, Ann Smock danced to the music played by her good friend Gordie Zealand at Omaha's Denim and Lace Country Dance Club.
“She liked the oldies, but her first love, of course, was country line dancing,” Zealand told 6 News.
On New Year's Eve, Ann went dancing at a party organized by Gordie and his wife Juleen. At the end of the night, when the crowd went home, Ann said goodbye to her friends -- saving Gordie for last.
“She gave me a hug like she normally does and says she'll ‘see me later.’ But then she came back and gave me another hug, and then she went out the door,” he said. “I got the last hug. I would gladly not want that hug just to keep her around."
Just a short time later Ann was killed in a car crash. She was rear-ended by an alleged drunk driver. Now, her four children are planning a funeral for a woman described as "energetic," "vibrant," and "kind." Ann's daughter, Michelle Hickey, told 6 News her mother was a woman of deep faith.
“Someone I had read was saying, ’she was dancing with Jesus," and I said ‘well, she's probably leading,” Zealand laughed.
Amid his grief, Gordie Zealand is finding strength in his dear friend's legacy of love, music, and dancing. He's also grateful for that New Year's hug from Ann – his final chance to say goodbye.
“It's something I'll remember. Along with when every New Year's Eve rolls around, I'm always going to remember Ann,” he said.
Funeral services for Ann Smock are set for Friday. Smock’s family tells 6 News they would like to thank the community for the outpouring of support, love and prayers.
