Goldie’s Gift Shop features local art, Nebraska-themed items in Gering
GERING, Neb. (KOLN) - If you are looking for for a great take-home gift or souvenir from your visit to the Nebraska Panhandle, you might want to pay a visit to unique store in downtown Gering.
Tina Worthman opened Goldie’s Gift Shop to provide a place for visitors to purchase items focused on Nebraska. Worthman also serves as tourism director for the city of Gering.
“We needed it. I think that Gering needed a place that you could buy things that are focused on Nebraska,” Worthman said. “People want things from here. They want to take some memento or something happy with them.”
The shop features local art and handmade items from Gering residents. Jenny Sauter, an artist who lives in Gering, has pieces on display that depict the town’s “O” Street. The shop also carries locally made candles, and books by local authors.
Worthman decorated the shop using personal items, including a picnic table built by her father, her old wagon, and her husband’s childhood dresser. Her mother-in-law’s bicycle is parked outside with a basket of flowers when the shop is open.
The shop’s name is a shortened version of Goldenrod, Nebraska’s state flower.
Worthman said the shop complements other tourism attractions in the area, including Scotts Bluff National Monument, Wildcat Hills, the Legacy of the Plains Museum, Chimney Rock and the Midwest Theater. Downtown Gering also has a plaza that hosts events throughout the year, including Santa Village at Christmas, Oktoberfest and summer events.
Store hours will expand during the summer tourism season and during events such as Oregon Trail Days and balloon races. The shop has a Facebook page and Instagram account.
