Today in History - March 20: Creighton University announces move to Big East Conference
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - On this day in 2013, Creighton officials announced the university would leave the Missouri Valley Conference behind for the Big East.
Creighton joined the “Catholic Seven” — schools like Providence and Saint John’s — along with fellow newcomers Butler and Xavier.
Creighton officially became a Big East member that July.
Creighton leaders called the invitation a rare opportunity they just couldn’t pass up, especially for the men’s basketball program.
The Big East started in 1979 as a seven-school alliance.
