Creighton powers past Marquette in overtime for fourth straight win
OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Creighton found a dramatic lifeline in the final seconds against Marquette and rode it to victory.
Freshman guard Neleigh Gessert drilled a late 3-pointer with just over 20 seconds to play, tying the game at 67.
The Bluejays forced overtime and outlasted Marquette 80-74 Sunday at D.J. Sokol Arena.
The win evened Creighton’s record at 12-12 overall and moved it to 8-7 in Big East play, while the Golden Eagles slipped to 16-8 overall and 10-5 in conference action.
Gessert’s shot accentuated a fourth-quarter comeback, but freshman guard Ava Zediker and senior forward Grace Boffeli powered the effort. The duo combined for 48 points, 20 rebounds and nine assists.
In overtime, they accounted for 11 of Creighton’s 13 points.
Zediker finished with a game-high 25 points, while Boffeli added 23 points and 14 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season and 44th of her career.
It was also Creighton coach Jim Flanery’s 61st birthday.
Creighton returns to the road Wednesday for a matchup with top-ranked Connecticut at 6 p.m. CT on Peacock.
