OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Flight delays and cancellations affected some travelers returning to Omaha’s Eppley Airfield following the nations’ longest government shutdown that led to staffing cuts at airports across the country.

The Goodwin sisters experienced significant delays on their return trip from Atlanta. Their first flight from Atlanta to Denver was delayed two hours.

“We went [from] Atlanta to Denver, and it was delayed two hours. Like, we were kind of late, but when we got there, it said eight, and it was supposed to leave at six,” Diamond Goodwin said.

Their connecting flight from Denver to Omaha faced additional delays.

“Our second plane from Denver to Omaha, it was delayed four hours because of the first flight that was there,” Gracie Goodwin said.

Other travelers experienced minimal disruption but witnessed delays affecting family members.

Connor Elliott, who flew back from a family wedding in Phoenix, said his brother faced tighter connections on a different airline.

“He made his way through somehow,” Elliott said. “They had to run from gate to gate, but they managed.”

Some travelers encouraged patience with airport staff during the disruptions.

“Don’t be a difficult customer, because honestly, these people are working without pay,” Gracie Goodwin said.

Elliott expressed relief at completing his journey home despite the widespread travel challenges.

“I feel bad for the folks that has affected it. I’m just glad that I was able to get home so I can go and see my babies,” Elliott said.
