Lincoln Public Schools warns of public urination social media trend
LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A viral social media trend involving videos of teens urinating on school property has made its way to Lincoln.
Lincoln Public Schools sent a letter to parents on Tuesday addressing the disturbing trend that’s been taking place in the school.
According to LPS, a new social media trend is encouraging teens to film themselves urinating on bathroom walls and floors, or trespass on school property at night and urinate on school facilities.
Various public urination accounts have popped up on social media, affecting various colleges, high schools and middle schools across the country.
“Not only is this unsafe and unsanitary, but it creates unnecessary work for our staff as they work to maintain clean school spaces,” said Allysa Diehl, Schoo Middle School Principal.
LPS said there have multiple incidents in the boys’ bathrooms at various schools, including Schoo Middle School, and are working to identify any students involved.
Any students who engage in the disruptive behavior will face disciplinary consequences and potentially legal consequences, LPS said.
“No student will be denied the ability to use the restroom when they need to use it, however, we may need to temporarily make adjustments in our protocols if this trend continues,” said Diehl. “This could include closing down bathrooms, limiting the number of open restrooms available to students, and closely monitoring bathroom areas for the safety of all.”
LPS is asking families to have a conversation with their child about respecting others and the spaces they occupy, and that bathroom spaces are no-cellphone zones.
LPS encourages people with information to tell a staff member or use the green “Safe to Say” button on their website.
