LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) - Nebraska Supreme Court Justice Lindsey Miller-Lerman has informed Gov. Jim Pillen that she will retire at the end of October.

Pillen’s office issued a news release Wednesday saying her resignation letter to the governor confirmed she will retire, effective Oct. 31.

“It has been a privilege to serve the citizens of Nebraska as an appellate judge since 1992,” she said in her letter.

Justice Miller-Lerman was appointed to the state Supreme Court in 1998 — the first woman on Nebraska’s high court. She was also among the first justices appointed to the Nebraska Court of Appeals, according to Wednesday’s release.

The Judicial Nominating Commission for the 2nd District of the Nebraska Supreme Court will be gathering names of potential nominees to submit to the governor. Pillen will then appoint a Supreme Court justice for Douglas County, which comprises Dist. 2.

Miller-Lerman’s announcement comes about a year after former Nebraska Supreme Court Justice Mike Heavican announced his retirement, which took effect on Oct. 31, 2024. In December, Pillen appointed Justice Jeffrey J. Funke into the position, which also represents the state at-large. He then appointed Justice Jason Bergevin of Columbus to the court’s 5th District post on Jan. 2.
