Bond denied for suspect in murder near Carter Lake

The suspect in the murder of a 59-year-old man near Carter Lake appeared in court on Wednesday.

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - The man arrested in connection to a homicide in Levi Carter Park last month made his first appearance in court Wednesday.

Brandon Mikesh, 27, was formally charged with first-degree murder, third-degree arson, use of a firearm to commit a felony, prohibited possession of a firearm and tampering with evidence.

Mikesh’s preliminary hearing was scheduled for July 22. He is being held without bond.

Omaha Police arrested Mikesh last Friday as a suspect in the murder of 59-year-old Bernard Leonard, who had been found unresponsive at 9th and Carter Boulevard on the the evening of May 17 with a gunshot wound.
