IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) - A Davenport woman is facing a child endangerment charge after authorities say she attempted to flush her newborn down a toilet and later left the baby in a trash can in Iowa City.

University of Iowa police say 22-year-old Ashley Hautzenrader gave birth to the child on Sunday in a bathroom at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and tried to flush the baby down a toilet.

Police say Hautzenrader put the baby in a pillowcase and left it in a trash can. A hospital employee later found the newborn alive.

Hautzenrader said she didn't know she was pregnant when she entered the restroom and thought the baby was dead because it didn’t cry.

She was being held in the Johnson County Jail, but was released Tuesday morning.
