Two Deaths In Crash

Two die in crash Sunday evening in western Cass County.

23-year-old Matthew F. Kirchhoff of Weeping Water and 22-year-old Emily F Widger of Lincoln were pronounced dead at the scene. The vehicle they were in was struck from behind just before 7:30pm.

The Cassgram reports Cass County Sheriff William C. Brueggemann advised deputies responded to the scene on Highway 34 one-half mile east of 310th Street in the rural Elmwood area. In communications with the sheriff's office, responders said there was one vehicle in the north ditch and one vehicle in the south ditch.

The sheriff's report said a westbound black 2006 Nissan Sentra sedan driven by Kirchhoff was struck from the rear by a high speed westbound silver 2006 Mazda sedan driven by 25-year-old Edward D. Koch of Quincy, Illinois.

Koch was transported to a Lincoln hospital by Elmwood Rescue. Elmwood Rescue requested a Lincoln Fire Department advanced life support unit to meet the squad and assist while en route

Major contributing factors were speed and alcohol, said Brueggemann.
