The Servants of Mary and the Marian Board of Directors have named Mary Higgins president of Marian, effective July 1, 2014. Higgins, a 1969 graduate of Marian, is the first alumna in the school’s 59-year history to be named president.

“Mary Higgins brings to Marian incredible strengths in leadership, compassion and communication that will help us successfully achieve the goals in our strategic plan called Building on Our Strength, Planning for our Future. Her career-long dedication to education and helping students realize their potential fit well with our mission of empowering girls to succeed as confident, independent, thinking leaders grounded in Servite values,” said Sr. Mary Gehringer, OSM, provincial of the Servants of Mary, the order that founded Marian in 1955.

Announced earlier this year, Marian implemented a president/principal leadership model. Supporting Higgins in her new role are Marian long-time administrators Kathy Tompkins and Rochelle Rohlfs, who are serving as interim co-principals for the upcoming school year.

The search for Marian’s president was national in scope and included input from the Marian community, according to Mary Ann Kilgore, a member of Marian’s Board of Directors and chair of the Selection Committee.

Higgins will join Marian after 39 successful years at Creighton University. She held leadership positions and was recognized with many prestigious awards for her accomplishments and service to students. Most recently she was assistant vice provost for Student Retention and Pre-Major Advising. Mary graduated from Creighton where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree, majoring in American Studies, and a Physical Education Teaching Certificate, K-12. She went on to receive a Master of Science in Physical Education degree from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

As a mother of a 2007 alumna, Higgins has served in many volunteer leadership capacities at Marian. She served on the Marian Board of Directors from 2005 to 2011, leading several committees and serving as board chair. Higgins also co-chaired MarianFEST in 2005, and was president of the Marian Alumnae Board from 2012 to 2014. “I am deeply honored and excited to rejoin the Marian community and help lead Marian High School into the future,” said Higgins. “My life of service and dedication to education was shaped by my time at Marian, and I remain forever grateful for the richness of my high school experience.”
