The husband of Nebraska's only female governor died Sunday in Lincoln. Bill Orr was 78.
The retired Woodmen of the World (now known as Assurity) executive in Lincoln is remembered for the way he embraced the role of first gentleman when his wife Kay Orr served as governor from 1987 to 1991.
Bill Orr even published a First Gentleman's Cookbook with his own recipes and contributions from Warren Buffett, Johnny Carson, Tom Osborne and actress Katharine Hepburn.
Orr's grandson, Taylor Gage, said his grandfather believed in conservative principles and taught him many practical things. Gage said Orr struggled with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease before his death.
The Orrs were married for 55 years. Kay Orr turned 74 in January.
Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at Christ Lutheran Church in Lincoln.
