Bicyclist Killed By Hit-And-Run Driver

A hit-and-run driver sent a man to the hospital in critical condition Saturday morning. Police say the victim was riding his bicycle when he was struck by a pickup.

The bicyclist was identified as 57-year-old Jose Sandoval of Omaha. He was heading northbound attempting to cross Q Street at 37th around 9:45 a.m. when he was hit by the westbound truck. Sandoval was not wearing a helmet.

The pickup driver momentarily stopped, then drove away.

"Apparently after the suspect fled the scene here he was involved in another accident down the street aways,” said Omaha Police Officer Michael Pecha. “That is still under investigation.”

The suspect was apprehended at his home near 27th and F streets. Nineteen-year-old Tomas De La Cruz-Prado of Omaha was booked at Douglas County Corrections for felony motor vehicle homicide, felony leaving the scene of an injury accident, DUI and not having an operator's license.
