The Nebraska City man accused of killing his girlfriend last Friday is being held without bond at the Otoe County Jail.
Thirty-year-old Jeremy Haag is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of 27-year-old Adessa Esser in the couple's home. Haag and Esser had been scheduled for a court appearance Monday in connection with a child-abuse case.
In February, they had been found guilty of misdemeanor counts of negligent child abuse. In December, there was a fire at the Nebraska City home they were sharing. Shortly after the fire, the child-abuse charges were filed against Esser and Haag, who were caring for seven children at the home.
Police say no children were there when the shooting occurred. Esser died after being flown to a Lincoln hospital. An autopsy is pending.
