All of the money collected through the Von Maur Victims Fund has been distributed to victims and their family members. The fund has been closed.
A total of $1,329,790 was collected to aid those affected by the December 5, 2007 shooting rampage at the Von Maur Westroads store. Robert Hawkins killed eight people and injured several others before shooting himself to death.
The money collected in the fund and its accrued interest has all been distributed.
Along with direct distributions to families, trust accounts for long-term care and college plans for minor children who lost a caregiver have been established.
The fund's advisory committee chair John Ewing is quoted in a news release as saying, "It has been an honor for us to support some measure of healing for the victims, their families and for our community.”
Counseling services are still available to the nearly 200 other people who were in the store at the time of the shootings. Those services can be arranged with a call to 2-1-1.
United Way of the Midlands established the victims' fund at the request of Von Maur management.
