A member of the Nebraska National Guard was among the 30 Americans killed when a U.S. military helicopter was shot down Saturday in Afghanistan.
The family of Sgt. Patrick Hamburger confirmed his death on Sunday. The 30-year-old Hamburger, a native of Lincoln who lived in Grand Island, had been in Afghanistan less than two weeks, according to his brother Chris.
He said Patrick didn't have to go, but wanted to because the
rest of his unit was going. He said it's not surprising his brother died trying to help his unit because he's always been protective of his family and friends. Sgt. Hamburger joined the guard when he was 18.
U.S. officials said insurgents shot down the military helicopter during fighting in eastern Afghanistan.
