Omaha Athletic Communications The Omaha men's basketball team moved into a tie for first place in the Summit League standings Sunday night, defeating South Dakota 75-68 at Baxter Arena. With their fourth straight win, the Mavericks improve to 11-8 (5-1 Summit League), while the Coyotes drop to 8-11 (2-4).
Leaders for Omaha
Zach Jackson led all scorers with 21 points on 7-of-12 shooting with four-3 pointers, marking his second straight 20-point scoring effort.
Matt Pile tallied his team-leading seventh double-double on 12 points and a career-high 14 rebounds, hitting 5-of-8 from the floor. The sophomore added three assists, a steal and a season-high four blocks.
Mitch Hahn and JT Gibson matched each other with 15 points, with Gibson shooting 7-of-9. Hahn also grabbed five boards for the night.
KJ Robinson finished with eight points, four rebounds and a game-high and season-best seven assists.
Leaders for South Dakota
Stanley Umude had a team-leading 20 points, and Triston Simpson put up 17 more with three assists and three steals. Tyler Peterson rounded it out with 12 points.
Omaha outshot South Dakota .509 (28-of-55) to .463 (25-of-54) from the field and .833 (10-of-12) to .778 (7-of-9) at the line. The Mavericks, who outrebounded their opponent for the fourth straight game, had a 34-22 advantage on the glass and also outscored USD 30-20 in the paint.
Inside the First Half
Omaha and South Dakota shot an identical .379 (11-of-29) in the opening 20 minutes, which saw seven ties and nine lead changes. A Gibson three with 1:01 to go locked it at 27-all, but a three-point play by Umude, who finished with 13 first-half points, capped the half. USD closed on a 10-3 run to lead 30-27.
Inside the Second Half
Jackson scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half and Hahn had another 13, as the duo canned three 3-pointers apiece to combine for 29 points in the second stanza. The Mavericks heated up to .654 (17-of-27) shooting as a team and had a 16-4 edge on the boards.
Omaha hit 5-of-5 from the field to start the half, and back-to-back threes from Robinson and Hahn ignited a 7-0 run finished with a Gibson jumper to make it 40-35 less than four minutes in. Three quick threes from Jackson dropped in from 13:37 to 11:48, as the Mavericks never relinquished their lead. They built to their largest advantage of seven, 61-54, with 4:40 to go.
With Omaha up 66-59 with 2:28 remaining, USD managed to cut it to 68-66 just ahead of the one-minute mark, but Hahn responded with a long three to stretch the lead. After forcing a Coyote turnover with 32 seconds remaining, Jackson and Hahn each hit a pair of free throws to close it out.
Noting Tonight's Game
-Omaha has won eight of its last nine games. Its four-game win streak matches its longest of the season from Dec. 15-28.
-The Mavericks have shot .500 or better as a team eight times this season.
-Gibson remains the only Maverick to hit a three in all 19 contests this season, which equals his career-long triple streak of 19 games set in 2017-18.
Omaha starts its next road swing at Purdue Fort Wayne this Thursday, Jan. 24. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. CT at Gates Sports Center in Fort Wayne, Ind.
