-- Sam Hauser hit a game-tying three-pointer at the end of regulation and Markus Howard scored a BIG EAST record 53 points to help No. 21 Marquette post a 106-104 overtime victory at Creighton on Wednesday night before 17,085 fans in Omaha.
The Golden Eagles trailed 85-80 with 8.9 seconds left, but got a putback from Joseph Chartouny with 0.8 left and after a Bluejay turnover tied the game on Hauser's desperation heave from the left wing. Howard did the rest, scoring Marquette's (13-3, 2-1 BIG EAST) first 11 points in overtime en route to breaking his own league and school record for points in a game. Marquette did not lead until scoring the first basket of the overtime session, and did not trail in the extra session after scoring the first five points in OT.
Ty-Shon Alexander had 23 points and Davion Mintz added a career-best 21 points for Creighton (10-6, 1-2 BIG EAST). Creighton shot 50.8 percent for the game (30-65) and drained 17-of-33 three-pointers (51.5 percent) in addition to 21-of-26 marksmanship (80.8 percent) at the line.
Howard scored his 53 points on 15-of-26 shooting, including 10-for-14 accuracy from three-point range. The junior guard also made 13-of-15 free throws and led the Golden Eagles with six assists in 43 minutes of work. Sam Hauser had 13 points and 10 rebounds, and his brother Joey Hauser had 13 points. MU shot 55.9 percent for the game, including 16-for-28 three-pointers, and also made 24-of-30 free throws. The Golden Eagles won the rebound battle 37-27.
Creighton led by as much as 32-19 in the first half and owned a 45-39 lead at the break. Mintz had 10 points in the first seven minutes and made all four of his shots before the intermission. The Bluejay bench also provided a lift, contributing 12 points.
Marquette wasted no time trimming the Creighton lead to one at 50-49, only to see the margin bounce back to eight after a 5-0 personal run from Bluejay freshman Marcus Zegarowski. The CU lead returned to double-figures at 68-58 with 9:06 left after a three-point possession following a technical foul on Marquette head coach Steve Wojciechowski.
The Golden Eagles scored the following seven points to draw within three with six minutes left ,and closed within one at 77-76 for the first time with 2:36 left after two Howard free throws. Howard twice more scored to keep the visitors within one point, but an Alexander bank shot with 17.7 left made it a three-point Bluejay lead. Howard would drive the lane, only to have his shot turned away by Martin Krampelj, who was fouled with 8.9 ticks to go. The Slovenian entered the game shooting 49.1 percent at the line, but would make both free throws as part of a 13-for-14 effort at the line on the evening that elevated his season free throw accuracy to 58.2 percent.
MU hurried upcourt and Sam Hauser missed a three-pointer, and Chartouny's second putback attempt dropped through the net with 0.6 left. A replay review upped that time to 0.8 left. Creighton inbounded the ball with an 85-82 lead, but a baseball pass sailed long, untouched, which led to MU getting the ball underneath its own hoop. Without a timeout, Howard inbounded the ball to Sam Hauser, who caught it, landed and quickly rose to sink a tying three-pointer. An lengthy replay review was deemed inconclusive, and the original call of the basket counted to lead to overtime.
After scoring the final five seconds of regulation, the Golden Eagles scored the initial five points of the extra session and never trailed. Howard scored 14 points in overtime, breaking the league record for points in a game on a free throw with 31.5 seconds left.
Creighton hosts defending national champion Villanova on Sunday, Jan. 13 at 11:00 a.m.
