Omaha Athletic Communications In a game that was a series of runs on both sides, the Omaha men's basketball team came up short in a first-place league showdown at South Dakota State, falling 83-73 at Frost Arena. The Mavericks, whose win streak was snapped at five games, are now 12-9 (6-2 Summit League) on the season, while the Jackrabbits improve to 17-6 (7-1).
Leaders for Omaha
KJ Robinson led Omaha with a season-high 23 points with four 3-pointers, five rebounds, an assist and a career-high-tying four steals. Mitch Hahn registered his second straight double-double on 14 points and a career-best-tying 15 rebounds alongside three assists and a steal.
JT Gibson also finished in double figures with 14 points, knocking down four more triples with a rebound, three helpers and a steal. Matt Pile added eight points, seven boards and two steals for the night.
Leaders for South Dakota State
Two-time Summit League Player of the Year Mike Daum was nearly unstoppable, posting a double-double on 33 points and 16 rebounds with five assists, three steals and two blocks. Daum's performance moved him up to 17th all-time on the NCAA Division I scoring list.
David Jenkins (19) and Skyler Flatten (16) joined him in double figures.
SDSU, which took sole possession of first place in the league standings, shot .532 (33-of-62) with 10 3-pointers to Omaha's .409 (27-of-66) with 12 triples. The Jacks had the edge on the glass, 38-34, and a 46-30 advantage in the paint. Omaha had 13 steals on the night.
Inside the First Half
Down 9-4 early, Omaha rattled off an 11-0 run to take a 15-9 lead by the under-12 timeout. After an SDSU bucket out of the break, the Mavericks stretched the lead to 20-13, punctuated by Gibson's first trey of the day. The Jacks countered with a 12-0 spurt of their own to take a five-point lead with six minutes to go.
A short 6-0 run with a Hahn jumper, Pile dunk and a steal and a layup from Robinson helped Omaha cut it to 32-30 with 2:32 left. But SDSU finished the period on a 9-3 run and led 41-33 at the halfway point.
Daum and Jenkins combined for 29 of SDSU's 41 points as the Jacks shot .548 (17-of-31) for the half. Gibson had nine points -- all on threes -- for Omaha, and Hahn hit the break with seven points and seven rebounds.
Inside the Second Half
After SDSU opened the second half with Jenkins' fourth 3-pointer, Omaha put together a 10-2 run that brought it within three at 48-45.
The Jacks worked to a double-digit lead before the Mavericks cut it to 59-54 with 12:43 to play. SDSU then built their largest advantage, 71-56, with nine minutes left before Omaha trimmed it again to a seven-point deficit, 73-66, on a layup and a three from Gibson with 5:36 remaining. But SDSU went back up with a 10-point cushion and never let the Mavericks back within striking distance the rest of the way.
Noting Today's Game
-JT Gibson remains the only Maverick with a make from three in every game this season for a career-long 21-game streak.
-Mitch Hahn has averaged 15.0 rebounds per game this week against SDSU and Purdue Fort Wayne.
-Zach Jackson was held under 10 points for just the second time this season.
-South Dakota State has won five straight in the series with Omaha.
Following a week's rest, Omaha returns home on Sunday, Feb. 3 to host North Dakota.
