York students show support for opposing coach at Girls State Basketball

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) -- A touching tribute on day one of the Girls State Basketball Championship in Lincoln.

As York and Elkhorn faced off at Pinnacle Bank Arena on Thursday morning, York students were decked out in purple. It isn't their school color -- rather in honor of an opposing coach.

The child of an Elkhorn Assistant Coach was born premature and passed away just days before the tournament.

Purple is the color for Prematurity Awareness.

Elkhorn defeated York in the game, 42 to 30.

The assistant coach, Ben Meyer, responded on Twitter, saying "Can't thank #yorkdukes enough for this AMAZING gesture! Just a class act all around."

A GoFundMe has been set up for Meyer. It can be found by clicking here.
