Waterloo home heavily damaged by fire

WATERLOO, Neb. (WOWT) - Shortly before 3 p.m. on Saturday fire crews from 5 different communities responded to devastating 2-alarm fire inside a home on the outskirts of Waterloo.

Waterloo, Elkhorn, Yutan Valley, and Boys Town fire crews are among the army of firefighters who responded to the call for help.

The Waterloo Fire Chief tells 6 News the fire appears to have originated in the garage of the home. Two vehicles inside were completely destroyed by the flames.

The house belongs to Carol and Ken Bruce. They were home at the time of the fire and escaped unharmed.

Carol told 6 News: "I don't think it took us a minute to get out of there... I smelled it and thought, oh God, that's a fire!"

Carol said as soon as she smelled the smoke in the garage, she quickly closed the garage door. She said: "I slammed the door because oxygen feeds fire."

The Waterloo Fire Chief told 6 News Carol's quick thinking likely helped prevent the fire from spreading and destroying the entire house.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
