Reporter Brian Mastre's story, Basketball Kindness, earned the award for Sports Reporting in the Region 5 Small Market Television category. This is Brian's seventh regional Murrow award; he has also won a national Murrow award as well as two Heartland Emmy Awards.
Being honored for such a feel-good story makes the win all that much sweeter.
" 'Basketball Kindness' is not a sports story, but rather a human kindness story. This story tugged at our heartstrings and left us all feeling good," said Andrew Stewart, general manager of WOWT. "A good reporter is a storyteller, and Brian is one of the best in the business.”
Mastre said he hopes others find the story inspiring.
"This is one of those stories that, I hope, will have ripple effects in spreading kindness," he said. "I'm grateful to Kyle and his family, as well as the other players, for sharing the story and showing the rest of us how it's done."
