WINTER WEATHER: Updates from other parts of Nebraska

While flooding affects most of the 6 News viewing area, the winter storm is wreaking havoc on the rest of the state of Nebraska as well.

Western Nebraska was hammered with a blizzard Thursday, closing down most roads, including Interstate 80 from Grand Island to Wyoming.

Central Nebraska received a mix of snow and floods, destroying roads and prompting evacuations.

Below is a list of updates from outside of the Omaha metro area:

The United State Postal Service announced closures of a dozen Nebraska post offices and one Iowa post office due to flooding. Flood-impacted customers can pick up their mail at a nearby office in another town. The offices are listed below:

The Nebraska State Patrol shared several images of flooding across northeast Nebraska. One image showed cars completely underwater in Columbus, while another showed people taking a boat through St. Edward.

reported a family of 10 in Norfolk, southeast of Highway 24 and 275 intersection, had to be rescued when water started flowing into their home. The rescue operation took several hours, and emergency responders had to ask the public for any available airboats.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation sent out a release advising against travel across northcentral and northeast Nebraska due to flooding. Anyone deciding to travel should check the

before getting out on the roads.

Gov. Pete Ricketts announced he will hold a winter weather update at 4 p.m. Officials from the Nebraska National Guard, Nebraska Emergency Management Agency, Nebraska Department of Transportation and Nebraska State Patrol will speak along with the governor.

The Nebraska State Patrol posted a photo to Twitter showing road conditions on Highway 21 south of Broken Bow on the Loup River. The road was completely washed away by floodwaters.

According to the Associated Press, evacuations occurred in Belgrade, Burwell, Cedar Rapids, Dannebrog, Harrington, Pierce, Randolph, St. Paul and Verdigre. A levee broke in the area north of Pierce.

The National Weather Service said the Loup River threatened to flood Genoa, which was also evacuated.

Wind gusts approaching 90 mph were reported in the Panhandle while they battled blizzard conditions.

According to the Associated Press, one person in a vehicle was swept away by floodwaters in Norfolk. The missing person had not been found by emergency crews as of mid-morning.

reported that the Nebraska Public Power District is limiting their response to outages due to blizzard and flood conditions. Roadways being flooded could cause a limited response to some areas, and the NPPD call center had to be relocated due to flooding.

reported a bridge in the Sandhills was washed away near the Spencer Dam. The bridge would normally allow Highway 281 to cross the Niobrara River.
