A day of action for volunteers on Thursday turned into a day of learning for Heartland students.

United Way volunteers read to kids from the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Midlands at Nebraska Medicine.

The event was done in part to highlight the importance of summer reading and tackle "brain drain."

The people behind the event said it wouldn't be possible without the volunteers.

"We feel that when volunteers have the opportunity to see first-hand where their dollars are going, the get to experience meaningful, memorable events to give of their time and talents," said Jill Samuelson with United Way of the Midlands.

Kids were given several books to take home with them.

Volunteers also read at two local elementary schools partnering with The Urban League and Completely Kids.
