OMAHA, Neb. (WOW) -- Valerie Cherry did not expect to have her car window smashed in Friday.
"There's so many people around," Cherry said. "There's lots of cars around."
Her purse inside was stolen. It happened all while she was within eyesight of her car. She brought a group of kids to play at the playground before her car was broken into.
"I was very panicked," Cherry said. "This is the first time something like that has ever happened to me before, so I didn't know exactly what to do."
She quickly called police, hoping to get things sorted out. She went there specifically because of the unseasonably warm weather.
What she did not know was that police have stepped up patrols in recent days. They said crime can often increase when the mercury rises.
Still, it is little comfort for her, knowing she has a lot of work to do.
"I need to get my credit cards stopped," Cherry said. "I need to figure out what to do moving forward from here."
She hopes to keep visiting Zorinsky in the future. For others who are visiting soon, she has some words of advice.
"Don't take your purse to the park," Cherry said.
