Train fire tangles Lincoln traffic

LINCOLN, Neb. -- A train fire closed the 27th Street overpass in Lincoln for a couple hours early Saturday morning.

Battalion Chief Jeremy Gegg with Lincoln Fire and Rescue said firefighters were called to the railroad tracks under the 27th Street overpass, near State Fair Park Drive, at 5:04 a.m.

LFR said a Burlington Northern Santa Fe locomotive had significant flames coming from it.

Gegg said crews were able to extinguish the fire fairly quickly but a variety of fluids leaked from the train.

A hazardous materials team was called to clean up the leak and was supervised by the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department.

The 27th Street bridge, State Fair Park Drive, Salt Creek Roadway and Kimco Drive were all closed during the incident for one to two hours.

There were no injuries.
