OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -- It has become the gateway to the Summer Olympics and a showcase event for Omaha. Tickets for the 2020 swim trials go on sale July 1st.

The Olympic swim trials have been a hit in Omaha since day-one, back in 2008. It's become a seminal event, nationally.

“We create a great atmosphere, we support the athletes and families when they are in town," said Josh Todd of the Omaha Sports Commission. "We really create the venue and the atmosphere that makes arguably this event harder than the Olympics themselves.”

Why does it work here?

“To have an airport so close, to have hotels so close, to have the Old Market so close, to have an accommodating venue here — there's so many combinations that make it so wonderful," USA Swimming COO Mike Unger said.

Thirteen months away and already 14,000 room nights have been booked in Omaha hotels. Three years ago, the city booked 21,000 room nights for the entire event.

“It brings in people from all over. That's why we see so many room nights that come in for the event," said Mark Rath, director of sales for Visit Omaha. "It seems like 75 percent of the people that have tickets that come into this event come in from out of town, which is really nice, spending money in our community, eating in our restaurants and enjoying Omaha.”

The swim trials run June 21-28, 2020. Tickets will be available at the CHI Health Center box office and on Ticketmaster on July 1.
