Students help senior citizens with dental care

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - Friday afternoon the senior citizens at Norte Dame Housing received a visit from Creighton University dental students as part of a program to assist the elderly with dental health.

The average income at Notre Dame is around $15,000 which can make it difficult for the residents to afford dental insurance.

The Creighton students provided checkups and cleanings to the residents free of charge.

Dr. Teryn Sedillo with Creighton says it's not just about cleaning teeth but educating seniors on oral hygiene and preventative steps they can take.

"We're all aging and there are a lot of different things that happen as we age. We want to bring those things to light for them. They all have the power over their own oral and body health."

47% of senior citizens nationwide say cost is the main reason they haven't seen a dentist.
