Package thief poses as salesman to scout houses
A porch pirate was caught on camera using a new tactic to steal packages in an Omaha neighborhood.
The person posed as a door-to-door cleaning services salesman in the area of 36th and Center.
"So if somebody is here then she can kind of play it off like she's here selling something probably nobody is going to want," victim Zach Milleson said.
The video shows the woman checking out a package on the porch.
"I think she's just scouting to see if we happen to be home or not," Milleson explained.
When nobody answered the door the woman put a flyer in the door, but quickly pulled it back and left.
Within two hours it became clear the woman didn't stop by to solicitation. She returned and stole the package off the porch, getting in a waiting car to make her getaway.
The thieves knew the coast would be clear because nobody answered the first time.
"Luckily, with Ring we were able to notice that she came, scouted and that she even came back," Milleson said.
His porch wasn't the only stop for the thieves.
"The neighbor across the street there also had a package stolen," Milleson said.
Through the Nextdoor website he counted six homeowners in his neighborhood reporting thefts.
The thieves may got a surprise from Milleson's package, though.
"My wife had ordered some nursing pads from Amazon, so I don't know if this lady is going to find much use in the nursing pads," he explained.
The flyer used by the thief to scout victims had printed references for a cleaning service. Area cleaning services didn't recognize the woman.
