Driver killed in Lincoln truck collision identified

A truck driver was killed in a crash involving two semis in Lincoln Tuesday morning.

According to witnesses, a truck hauling rock was westbound on Waverly Road. After stopping for the stop sign at the intersection with Highway 77, it collided with a southbound grain truck around 6 a.m. The grain truck rolled onto its side and burst into flames upon impact.

The driver of the grain truck, 21-year-old Brandon Gerdes of Osmond, Nebraska, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was a junior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The driver of the other semi, 67-year-old Gary Jacobsen of Garland, Nebraska, was hospitalized in critical but stable condition.
