Omaha zoo's littlest giraffe given sweet name

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium announced the name of the new giraffe calf that joined the herd last month.

The zoo announced in a Facebook live on Friday that the little girl giraffe will be called Zoe.

Happy Endangered Species Day! Great day to announce the name of our female giraffe calf. Here she is to help us do the honors.

The zoo held a Facebook contest to choose the name for the calf, and ultimately chose the name of a little girl who recently died of cancer and loved giraffes.

Zoe's teacher, Josh Stephens, asked other Facebook users to vote for the name in memory of his late student.

The calf was born on April 16 and is the third calf of mom, Dottie, and dad, Jawara.
