POTTAWATTAMIE COUNTY, Iowa -- The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) released documents earlier this month indicating the school bus driver of the fatal school bus crash had a history of medical issues leading up to the crash.
The crash happened Dec. 12, 2017. The 74-year-old driver, Donald Hendricks, was killed in the crash; 16-year-old Megan Klindt was also killed.
The NTSB investigation states the crash occurred when the driver turned from a rural gravel road onto a residential driveway for a student pickup. After the student got on the bus, the driver reversed out of the driveway and backed across the road continuing until the bus' rear wheels ran off the road.
Federal investigators have said the fire began in the engine compartment after the bus backed into a ditch and became stuck.
Documents show that Hendricks died next to the driver's seat.
The NTSB will hold a board meeting at 8:30 a.m. June 18 to determine the probable cause.
