Milford man killed in crash on slick I-80
A Sunday morning crash on Interstate 80 took the life of a Milford, Nebraska man. He's identified as Robert Robotham, 71.
According to the Nebraska State Patrol, Jason May, 50, of Omaha was eastbound in a semi around 7:30 A.M. when he lost control on the slick pavement. The rig jackknifed.
Two other eastbound vehicles hit the semi including Robotham's Mercury Mariner. He was trapped in the car and later died at a Lincoln hospital.
The second vehicle that hit the semi was a Toyota pickup driven by Eliud Benitez, 42, of Omaha. Benitez was not seriously hurt.
About an hour later, there was a second crash in the same area. The driver of an eastbound semi lost control while approaching the scene of the first crash.
That semi, driven by Tulkin Nizamov, 33, of Brooklyn, NY, crossed the median and sideswiped a westbound Dodge pickup, driven by Tiffany Hale, 40, of Lincoln.
NSP says Hale had slowed down after seeing the previous accident and was able to maneuver to avoid a more serious collision with the semi. She and her two daughters in the vehicle were treated for minor injuries and released a short time later.
Investigators say it appears that freezing drizzle and snow contributed to both incidents.
