Massive fire kills 6,500 pigs in north central Iowa
A fire at a farm in Dolliver Iowa has killed 6,500 pigs and caused an estimated 10 million dollars in damage.
The fire was reported around 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning. When firefighters arrived they saw the center barn completely engulfed.
After trying to put the fire down, crews had to back off to a more defensive position to protect the surrounding land. When the buildings all collapsed firefighters were able to put the flames out.
It took 6 and a half hours for crews to fight the fire.
Three hog buildings on the farm were a total loss and housed an estimated 2,500 sows and 4,000 piglets.
The farm is owned by Christensen Family Farms and it is unknown at this time what started the fire.
