LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) -- Lancaster County Sheriff's investigators have cited a Lincoln Police officer for giving alcohol to his 19-year-old girlfriend at a party last month.

Following an investigation initiated in December, Scott Bierle, 26, was cited for providing alcohol to Mercedees Smith, 19. The citations have prompted an LPD internal affairs investigation.

Smith was cited for minor in possession.

The incident brought to Sheriff Terry Wagner's attention by LPD Chief Bliemeister involved a Dec. 16 off-duty gathering at a Lincoln bar.

"During that gathering, Bierle purchased alcohol for Smith," Tuesday's release from the Sheriff's Office states.

In a statement Tuesday, Bliemeister commended the officers who initially reported the incident involving their coworker.

"The employees that brought the information forward, did what is right and what is expected for members of the law enforcement profession," he said.

The Sheriff's Office investigation found no indication of any involvement by any other officers present at the gathering; nor of any other misconduct involving Smith.

Bierle has been placed on modified duty.

Bierle and Smith are scheduled to appear Feb. 13 in Lancaster County Court.
