Lincoln Southeast players kneel during national anthem

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - Lincoln Southeast High School football player Sterling Smith and a teammate kneeled during the national anthem Friday night as a silent protest at Seacrest Field.

Southeast defeated Lincoln East 17-14.

Some athletes have done this to show support for San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who remained seating during the national anthem before preseason games.

Kaepernick said last month he was protesting what he feels is the oppression of minorities in the U.S. "I am not going to stand up to show pride in a flag for a country that oppresses black people and people of color. To me, this is bigger than football and it would be selfish on my part to look the other way. There are bodies in the street and people getting paid leave and getting away with murder."
