Knicely Done: Sewing to soothe the soul

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -- Nici Ivey discovered something she didn't know about herself.

Just after her twins were born about two years ago, Nici decided to learn how to sew with the idea of making some matching outfits for her boy-girl twins and it turns out she's pretty good at it.

"I thought that it would be awesome to create something somebody could actually wear," she said in an interview with WOWT 6 News. Now the whole family is wearing some of her creations.

Nici and her husband Bobby also have older kids Lena, 10 and Parker, 7 to care for along with the twins Madeline and Max.

"The twins keep us super busy," said Bobby. "And every week there are girl scout and boy scout meetings, Lena has pageant weekends, and I work full time along with reserves that I do once a month."

Nici also sets aside time to help care for Jeff, an adult family friend who has disabilities.

"He calls me everyday and asks 'Can I ride my bike today?' I help when I can and take him bowling on weekends."

Even with all those constant demands on her time, Nici has managed to become quite proficient at sewing.

"When designers are working on something new they need people to test it and they'll put a tester call out and I've been chosen," she said. "I'm pretty proud of myself to have good enough skills to test patterns."

Nici's husband Bobby made it clear that he's her biggest fan as he modeled a homemade "Walking Dead" hoodie.

"Someone told me it looks like something I bought at the mall," he said. "It started as little hobby but wow I'm proud of her, she's taken it to a different level and taught herself."

Nici is eager to share her experience with others and that's why she started a blog that journals her progress and trials.

"It's okay if you mess up. I don't think I've really made anything perfect, but I try. And it relieves stress. I get to be creative while doing something I enjoy. It's very relaxing."

If things fall into place during the daily routine, Nici finds time to sew during nap time for the twins.

"I'm organized," she said. "I use some of the time to lay out and organize my patterns. Then the next time I sit down, I'll go straight to sewing. Thank goodness for nap time!"
