Huskers Bounce Back With 44-8 Victory

LINCOLN, Neb. (WOWT) -- The Huskers love night games at Memorial Stadium and 89,593 fans watched Nebraska get back on the winning track against Northern Illinois with a 44-8 victory Saturday.

The Huskers have won 21 of their last 23 games under the lights at Memorial Stadium. Nebraska jumped out to a 16-0 lead and set the tone for the rest of the night.

Isaac Armstrong got the Huskers on the scoreboard with a 33-yard field goal to take the lead 3-0 in the first quarter. Then quarterback Adrian Martinez passed to Maurice Washington and he raced 21 yards for a touchdown. Nebraska led 10-0 after the first quarter.

Washington showed his speed, when he pulled away from the secondary and ran 60 yards for a touchdown. The kick was no good. Nebraska led 16-0. Nebraska got another big run from JC transfer Dedrick Mills, when be broke free up the middle for a 24-yard touchdown run. Nebraska led 23-3 in the second quarter.

After Northern Illinois scored off a safety, the Huskers answered with an 87 yard drive in the final minute of the first half. Martinez threw a 27-yard pass to Kanawai Noa for a touchdown with five seconds left in the half. The catch was overtuned by the officials in the replay booth, who said he got a foot down in the end zone and kept control of the ball. Nebraska led 30-5 at halftime.

Martinez completed 13-20 passes for 216 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. Mills was the leading rusher at halftime with 90 yards on just four carries.

There was not any repeat of last week's performance in the third quarter. Martinez capped off a 48-yard drive in 7 plays with a 10-yard touchdown run. Nebraska led 37-8.

The Husker Blackshirts opened the 4th quarter with a goal-line stand. Northern Illinois threw an incomplete pass on 4th down at the one yard line.

Backup quarterback Noah Vedal came in late in the 4th quarter and scored on a 3-yard touchdown run. Nebraska led 44-8 with 4:04 left in the game.

Nebraska's 44-8 victory raised their record to 2-and-1 on the season.
The Huskers open the Big Ten Conference season next Saturday, when they play at Illinois. The kickoff is at 7:00p.m. The game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

Great evening for a football game. 45 minutes to kickoff.

Tonight's game has been moved from Fox Sports 1 to the FOX Business Channel to start the game. The delay of the Iowa-Iowa State has forced FOX to switch channels.

Northern Illinois kicks off to Nebraska. The Huskers take over at the 23 yard line. On third down-- long pass of 41 yards to JD Spielman. Noa catches first pass of his career at Nebraska for 14 yards.
4th and 9 at 19. 36 yard field goal by Armstrong. The Huskers take the lead 3-0 with 12:31 left in first quarter.


UNI takes over at 25 yard line. Great defense on opening possession. Three and out.51 yard punt. Nebraska has the ball at the 23 yard line.
Dedrick Mills has a 61 yard run to the 16 yard line. Great run between the tackles. But Mills fumbles the ball on next play.

UNI takes over at 12 yard line.The drive ends at 36 yard line. UNI punt.Huskers come up with a blocked punt.Isaiah Stalbird with the block.

UNI punts. The Huskies fake it and gain two yards. Just short of the first down marker. Nebraska takes over at 34 yard line.
UNI called for a personal foul-targeting. UNI #11 Trayshon Foster has been taken out of the game.

Armstrong has a 37-yard field goal blocked. Where is the next Alex Henery. The Former Husker is in the stands tonight, since he was inducted into the Nebraska Football Hall of Fame.

UNI punts to NU. The Huskers take over at their 20 yard line. Three plays and a punt for Huskers. Great 53 yard punt by Armstrong. UNI ball at 19 yard line.

WOW! Washington just explodes over the left side 60 yards for a touchdown. No one touched him on the run. The extra point is blocked.

UNI takes over at 25 yard line. Collin Miller makes a nice tackle for a loss. Injury on the field. Time out. Cam Taylor-Britt on the field--looks like a shoulder injury on the tackle. He walks off the field.

Martinez passes 25 yards to Mike Williams. Then Mills busts up the middle for a touchdown. 4 plays - 50 yard drive.

UNI takes over at 22 yard line. 4th and 9 at the 33. Punt.
The Huskers get ball at the 14 yard line. Missed opportunity. 32-yard field goal and it is blocked. This is getting sad...How could a school the size of Nebraska have such poor kickers. Give me Paul Rogers, Dale Klein, Kris Brown, or Alex Henery.

The Husker offense needs to put the ball in the end zone or go for it on fourth down in the future. This is just not good for the Nebraska football program. There are high school kickers saying right now.. they can play for the Huskers.

Northern Illinois comes out in the third quarter and gets on the scoreboard with a 27-yard field goal.


Look out--This third quarter is starting to look like last week at Colorado. The Husker offense just cannot get anything going on a consistent basis.

Will Honas comes up with a nice five yard tackle for a loss.
UNI ready to punt. Nebraska takes over at 48 yard line.

Martinez to Jack Stoll goes to 21 yard line.Husker recover fumble after catch. Mills is running hard up the middle with a gain of four yards. Then he comes back with another four yard run. Martinez makes a great fake and keeps the ball 10 yards for a touchdown. Nebraska leads 37-8 with 3:00 left in the third quarter.


UNI is on the march. First and ten at the 50 yard line. UNI pass down to 34 of Nebraska. Sloppy tackling. Is the defense getting tired again??


Great goal line stand by the Husker Blackshirts with 12:42 left in the game. They do not look tired anymore.
