WEST DES MOINES, Iowa -- Authorities in Iowa said Sunday afternoon that one of the four family members found dead in their West Des Moines home Saturday morning, Chandrasekhar “Chandra” Sunkara, 41, was an employee of the Iowa Department of Public Safety.
The other two victims were Sunkara’s wife Lavanya and their two sons, ages 10 and 15.
The DPS released a statement Sunday afternoon reading:
"It is with deep sadness that the Iowa Department of Public Safety confirms the death of one of our employees.
"Chandrasekhar “Chandra” Sunkara was found deceased in his West Des Moines home Saturday morning along with his wife and two sons.
"Chandra was a civilian employee in the Technology Services Bureau (TSB), where he served as an IT professional.
"Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and friends of the Sunkaras. Counseling services will be available on Monday for any employee needing assistance."
Relatives who were staying with the victims made the discovery of the bodies. All of the victims appeared to have been shot.
Real estate records indicate the family has owned the home since March.
Police say there are still a lot of questions.
Des Moines Police Sergeant Dan Wade said, "The key point here is that this investigation will take some time. I know there are a lot of questions on what happened here and we're working towards developing answers to those questions."
While investigators look for those answers they said that there is no ongoing threat to the community.
