Huskers claim 13-10 win over Northwestern on late field goal

Nebraska got the 13-10 win over Northwestern Saturday with a field goal as time ran out.

89,384 fans turned out for the Homecoming game between Nebraska and Northwestern on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskers got on the scoreboard in the first quarter, when Wan'Dale Robinson broke free up the middle and raced 42 yards to the end zone. The touchdown by the freshman gave Nebraska a 7-0 lead.

The Huskers drove downfield in the second quarter. The big play was a 24 yard pass from quarterback Adrian Martinez to his tight end Austin Allen.

That pass set up a 35-yard field goal by sophomore placekicker Lane McCallum.

Nebraska led 10 to 0.

But Northwestern answered with a 40-yard field goal from Charlie Kuhbander.

Nebraska still led 10-3 at halftime.

Northwestern came out in the second half and drove 58 yards in just 6 plays. Aiden Smith scored on a two yard touchdown run. The Wildcats tied the game up at 10 all.

Nebraska came up with a big play with 5 minutes left in the third quarter. Martinez passes to Robinson and the freshman goes 49 yards down to the 17 yard line of Northwestern.

The long play set up a 29-yard field goal attempt by McCallum. But the kick hit the pole on the right side. The Huskers failed to get on the scoreboard.

On the final play of the 3rd quarter, Martinez limped off the field with an injury. Backup Noah Vedral came in the game at quarterback.

Nebraska will be looking to get its Big Ten traction back on a soggy day in Lincoln as the Huskers host Northwestern at 3 p.m.

Big Red has some stabilizing to do, coming off last week's battle with the Buckeyes.

The Huskers bring a 3-2 overall record to the field Saturday afternoon and they'll be working without


The Wildcats show up at 1-3 but as Husker Coact Scott Frost said on Thursday, "They play hard, they're physical and they don't make mistakes."

Wandale Robinson rambled 42 yards for a touchdown. Nebraska takes the lead 7-0 with 4:25 left in the 1Q. The drive was 70 yards in just 8 plays.

Nebraska goes three and out. Punt down to 7 yard line..almost a fumble.


Husker take over at 21 yard line.

Defensive holding and roughing the passer gives Nebraska a first down at 47. Two Penalties on Wildcats.

FIELD GOAL! Lane McCallum is good. The Huskers lead 10-0 with 8:24 left in 2nd quarter.


50-yard kickoff return by Northwestern to midfield. Quarterback scramble down to 23 of Nebraska. Fooled blackshirts on third down. Mo Barry sack on quarterback at 24.

40-yard field goal is just barely good. Line drive kick just clears the goal post.

The Huskers still lead 10-3 with 5:15 left in first quarter.

Martinez runs on final play of 3rd quarter and limps off the field. He got yanked on the tackle. We will see his status.

Nebraska takes over at 20 yard line. McCaffrey in at quarterback for one play. Vedral back in. Vedral gets first down with five yard run.

Vedral passes to Robinson for 9 yards to the 43 yard line.

4th and one--Nebraska will punt. Northwestern takes over at the 25 ayrd line with 5:56 left in the game.
