An organization for family and friends of Omaha Police launched a new child-centered service project.

The group Strength Behind the Blue started Kids Behind the Blue and kicked off the Kerrie On Kids Coat Drive.

It's a winter-wear donation event across metro schools to collect coats, hats, boots, gloves and anything to help the less fortunate through the chilly weather. It’s all in honor of fallen Officer Kerrie Orozco.

Strength Behind the Blue hopes to make a difference in the community and in the way people see our police.

"Not only are we able to help the community but we're able to show them that there's more to law enforcement than what you see on the streets. We really are families that are dedicated to serving. And our children are dedicated to serving as well,” said Annie Smith, co founder of the organization.

By getting kids involved in the event, Strength Behind the Blue says they see the importance of giving back just like their parents.
