OTOE COUNTY, Neb. -- The Otoe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal accident on Highway 75 south of Nebraska City.
Fire crews were dispatched at 11:45 p.m. Wednesday to a truck on fire before learning it was a multi-vehicle crash.
Firefighters extinguished fires in the cab of the truck and a Toyota. There were also grass fires on both sides of the highway pushed by wind gusts of 24 mph.
Investigators say the truck driver sustained some injury but was able to escape the flames.
The driver of the Toyota died at the scene. He is believed to have crossed the center line into the path of the truck and semi-trailer.
Sheriff’s deputies described severe impact damage to both vehicles.
Traffic on both lanes was blocked through 4:15 a.m.
Highway 75 has been an alternate route since flooding closed Interstate 29.
