Zoo construction worker critically injured by steel beam

A construction worker was injured at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo and Aquarium Monday morning.

He was injured by a 500-pound steel beam near the Desert Dome around 11:30 a.m. The worker was conscious and alert as he was taken to Nebraska Medicine in critical condition.

His name hasn't been released. Kiewit Construction says he's an ironworker for subcontractor M&M Steel Erection and was working on the Conservation Academy at the time of the accident.

 At approximately 11:30 a.m., an ironworker for subcontractor M&M Steel Erection was injured while working on the Conservation Academy construction project at the Henry Doorly Zoo. Paramedics were called to the scene and the worker was taken to the Nebraska Medical Center for treatment. The worker was conscious and alert upon transport.
