SARPY COUNTY, Neb. (WOWT) -- A section of Giles Road in Sarpy County is now undergoing some much-needed construction.
Construction shuts down portion of Giles Road
Drivers who use Giles from 168th to 192nd streets will have to find a new route starting Monday, when that section of the road will be closed for construction and paving.
Weather permitting, the road will be reopened by May 2020.
Sarpy County has begun Phase 1 of a two-part paving project on Giles Road from 168th to 192nd streets, closing that section of the road until completion.
According to the county communications manager, crews will be working to replace sanitary and storm-sewer infrastructure and box culverts between 168th and 180th streets. Once they finish that construction, they'll start paving portions of the road.
Sarpy County officials tell 6 News that the addition of several housing developments along Giles Road near the gravel road has caused the road to not be in the best condition.
The whole project will be split into two phases. Phase 1 deals with the section of Giles between 168th and 180th streets; only 168th to 174th will be paved. Phase 2 will consist of work on Giles between 180th and 192nd streets; paving on that portion goes from 188th Street.
The section of Giles Road won't be paved during this project because county officials will be re-routing it in the next few years. Those exact plans haven't been decided yet.
