Church members voice concerns to archbishop at town hall

OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) -- Parishioners at St. Wenecelaus Catholic Church say they feel unheard. The church held a town hall after a priest was removed from ministry following accusations of misconduct.

At the town hall, many people go up to speak after archbishop Lucas described what was going on.

One woman says "it was a conversation that needed to be held."

Another man says "it was a sorry display of leadership."

The archbishop said that Fr. Nigli was recently removed from ministry after a 21-year-old male accused him of sexual assault - kissing and fondling over his clothing.

Omaha Police fell 6 News they investigated and the case did not rise to the level of a crime.

Now people are holding their parish accountable.

They voiced how furious they were. They say there was no transparency after Father Nigli was given a second chance by the archdiocese after a previous allegation at a different church in O'Neill.

No criminal charges were filed there either.

Many people here have kids that go to the school. One family says they love the school but as a young family they are terrified.

The archbishop says what seemed as a good system on paper failed.

He admitted this was the wrong decision.

In order to prevent this from happening again the archbishop says they will look at the assignments of priests and review them again to make sure all priests are placed appropriately.
