COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (WOWT) -- A Council Bluffs teenager has been named one of 25 finalists for a prestigious award.

Pro football Hall of Famer Andre Tippett presented a plaque to Abraham Lincoln Senior Claire Jones, who is a finalist for the Award for Excellence. Tippett says they look over about 500 applicants for the award then narrow it down to 25 finalists and Jones is one of them.

The award is given out by the U.S. Army and pro football hall of fame, recognizing high achieving student athletes.

"I work hard in the classroom, get the best grades that I can. I work hard at my sports, I'm always pushing myself to get better. And outside of that, doing community service things such as volunteering for the Junior Lynx girls' basketball program, or helping volunteer coach a little girls' soccer team,” Jones told 6 News.

As for sending someone to West Point, her family is getting the hang of it. Her brother Harrison is already there.

Jones isn't the only Heartland teen nominated for this award. Lauren Jacobsen of Wisner-Pilger High and Kloee Sander of Lincoln Pius are also nominated.

The winner will be announced on August 4th.
