Bellevue City Council votes down apartment smoking ban
Bellevue apartment residents will continue to be able to smoke in their residences after the City Council voted against an ordinance that would have banned smoking in apartment complexes.
The proposal came about after carelessly discarded cigarettes led to two fires in one week in July at Gateway Park Apartments near Fort Crook Road and Harvell Drive.
Councilman Dan Preister, who proposed the bill, says it would prevent fires and cut insurance rates for property owners. Opponents say it's a prime example of government overreach. Preister was the only city council member who voted to pass the ordinance on Monday.
