NORFOLK, Neb. -- A standoff with a suspect in a Norfolk shooting came to an end around midnight when authorities found the body of their suspect, Cory Dittman, 47, of Norfolk, inside a house where he had holed up Sunday morning.
The incident began with a shooting around 9:30 Sunday morning. Authorities tracked Dittman to a house near the downtown area and the standoff began.
Sunday negotiations fell short and around 6 p.m. officials began to fire tear gas into the house to no avail.
The victim of the initial shooting made his way to the Police Department and was taken to the hospital for treatment. On Monday he was said to be in critical but stable condition.
A day-long standoff continued into the night.
Around midnight a search team went in and found Dittman's body in an upstairs room. Authorities say he had a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head and died at the scene.
The Nebraska State Patrol is leading the investigation and, as per state law, a grand jury will review the incident.
